Active Directory and Entra ID Hardening: Defending Hybrid Identity Infrastructure Against Lateral Movement

13 min read

Nine out of ten major enterprise intrusions pass through Active Directory or Entra ID. Hardening hybrid identity requires closing the trust bridges between on-premises domains and cloud tenants.

For all the investment enterprises make in perimeter firewalls and endpoint tools, most catastrophic breaches follow the same trajectory: an attacker lands on a standard user workstation, extracts cached credentials or session tokens, traverses decades of accumulated Active Directory access control lists (ACLs), and reaches Tier 0—either on-premises Domain Admins or cloud Global Administrators in Microsoft Entra ID. Once Tier 0 falls, the attacker owns the identity plane and uses your own management tools against you.

Securing hybrid identity requires treating Active Directory, Entra Connect, Active Directory Certificate Services (AD CS), and Entra ID as a single interconnected attack surface.

The Hybrid Identity Attack Surface

Enforcing Tier 0 Isolation Without Breaking Operations

The single most common flaw we uncover in enterprise identity assessments is a Domain Admin logging into a standard server or workstation to troubleshoot an issue. That action deposits a Domain Admin TGT or NTLM hash into LSASS memory on a lower-tier machine, waiting to be harvested.

1. Dedicated Privileged Access Workstations (PAWs)

Tier 0 administrators must authenticate exclusively from hardened, hardware-isolated Privileged Access Workstations that block internet browsing, email, and Productivity SaaS.

2. Authentication Policy Silos & Protected Users

Place all Tier 0 human accounts into the built-in Protected Users security group and bind them to Kerberos Authentication Policy Silos. This blocks NTLM fallback, restricts TGT lifetime to four hours, and prevents credential caching on non-silo hosts.

3. Eliminating Standing Cloud Privilege with Entra PIM

In Entra ID, convert all permanent Global Administrator, Privileged Role Administrator, and Application Administrator assignments to eligible-only roles requiring FIDO2 re-authentication, ticket justification, and time-bound activation.

Securing the On-Premises to Cloud Sync Bridge

Hybrid enterprises often harden Entra ID while leaving legacy Active Directory trusts untouched—or vice versa. Attackers exploit the seam: seamless SSO keys, Pass-Through Authentication agents, Federation servers (AD FS), and Entra Connect servers. Decommission legacy AD FS where possible in favor of native cloud authentication with Phishing-Resistant MFA, and rotate the AZUREADSSOACC Kerberos decryption key every 30 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Active Directory still the primary target in enterprise breaches?

Because Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID govern authentication and authorization for almost every workstation, server, and SaaS application. Compromising hybrid identity allows an attacker to move laterally and deploy ransomware using legitimate administrative tools.

What is Tiered Administration in Active Directory?

A strict isolation model where Tier 0 (domain controllers, Entra Global Admins, PKI, Entra Connect servers) cannot log into Tier 1 (application servers) or Tier 2 (user workstations), preventing credential theft on a workstation from escalating to domain dominance.

How do attackers bypass MFA in hybrid Entra ID environments?

Common techniques include session cookie theft via adversary-in-the-middle (AiTM) phishing, abusing legacy authentication protocols, exploiting misconfigured Entra Connect sync accounts, and Golden SAML or PRT token forging.

What is Kerberoasting and how do we stop it?

Kerberoasting requests service tickets for accounts with Service Principal Names (SPNs) and cracks their password hashes offline. Stop it by migrating service accounts to Group Managed Service Accounts (gMSAs) with 120-character rotating passwords and enforcing AES encryption.

How often should Active Directory and Entra ID be audited?

Continuous automated posture monitoring should run daily to catch ACL drift, new privileged group memberships, and risky OAuth consents, paired with a deep adversary-emulation review every six months.
