Core Web Vitals Optimization 2026: The Technical Changes That Move the Numbers
Core Web Vitals are not a ranking factor you can game. They are user experience metrics, and improving them requires technical changes to how your page loads and responds.
Core Web Vitals are Google's measurement of real-world user experience on web pages. They are also a ranking factor, which means they affect search visibility. But treating them as an SEO exercise misses the point: they measure how fast and stable your page feels to users, and improving them requires technical changes, not meta tag tweaks.
The three metrics
| Metric | What it measures | Good | Poor |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | Time until the largest visible element renders | Under 2.5s | Over 4s |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | Time until the page responds to user interaction | Under 200ms | Over 500ms |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | How much the page layout shifts during loading | Under 0.1 | Over 0.25 |
Improving LCP: get the main content visible fast
- Optimise the hero image. Serve it in WebP or AVIF format, preload it with
rel="preload", and use responsive images withsrcset. The hero image is usually the LCP element. - Reduce server response time (TTFB). Use a CDN, enable caching, and optimise database queries. A slow server delays everything, including LCP.
- Remove render-blocking resources. Inline critical CSS, defer non-critical JavaScript, and load fonts asynchronously. Render-blocking resources delay the first paint, which delays LCP.
- Use server-side rendering or static generation. SSR and SSG send complete HTML, so the browser can display content immediately without waiting for JavaScript.
Improving INP: make the page responsive
- Reduce JavaScript execution time. Code split, tree-shake, and remove unused JavaScript. Every kilobyte of JavaScript must be downloaded, parsed, and executed — and execution blocks interaction.
- Break up long tasks. JavaScript tasks longer than 50ms block the main thread. Use
requestIdleCallbackorscheduler.yield()to break long tasks into smaller chunks. - Defer third-party scripts. Analytics, chat widgets, and tracking pixels are common causes of poor INP. Load them after the page is interactive, not during initial load.
- Use web workers. Move heavy computation off the main thread so it does not block interaction.
Improving CLS: make the page stable
- Reserve space for images and embeds. Use
widthandheightattributes or CSSaspect-ratioso the browser allocates space before the image loads. - Do not inject content above existing content. Banners, cookie notices, and ads that push content down cause layout shift. Place them below or use
position: fixed. - Preload fonts. Late-loading fonts cause text to shift when the font renders. Use
font-display: swapand preload font files. - Reserve space for ads. If you show ads, reserve the ad slot dimensions before the ad loads. Dynamic ad sizes without reserved space are a major cause of CLS.
Technical changes that move the numbers
Core Web Vitals are user experience metrics, not SEO tricks. We make the technical changes — image optimisation, JavaScript reduction, layout stability — that improve real-world performance and search rankings.
